The Citizens Police & Fire Academy is a six-week course designed for the average citizen who wants to learn more about the Savage Police and Fire Departments. Through participation in both classroom and hands-on training, citizens gain valuable insight into what officers and firefighters do, how they do it, and most importantly, why they do it. Topics include patrol tactics, investigations, crime scene processing, and use of force decisions.

In an effort to provide training for newly hired staff, the Fire Department Ride-Along Program has been suspended until January 1, 2026.

If you are a Savage resident and would like to complete a Ride-Along during this time, please email mjorissen@savagemn.gov.

The Ride-Along Program provides an opportunity for residents to experience fire service functions firsthand.

The Savage Fire Department ride-along program is offered to residents, students and those employed within the city. Every attempt will be made to accommodate interested persons; however, any applicant may be disqualified without cause.

If interested in participating, complete the Ride Along Application and email it to mjorissen@savagemn.gov.

Night to Unite is an annual event held on the first Tuesday of August that encourages residents to get out in the community, meet neighbors, and partner with police. Many neighborhoods throughout Savage host block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, and bike parades. Registered parties can also have a visit from police, fire, city officials and staff.

We can all help make the world a safer place by learning more about fire safety. Savage Fire strives to provide safety tips on a wide range of timely and important topics - everything you need to know to keep you, your family, and your neighbors safe from fire and related hazards. 

Savage Fire hosts and leads several public educational events throughout the year including:

• CPR and First Aid
• Assisting with smoke alarms and CO detectors
• Station and truck tours
• Visiting local schools during Fire Prevention Week to discuss fire safety and prevention
